Reclaiming Your Real Self: A Psychological and Spiritual Integration (2009)
Spirituality in Counseling and Psychotherapy: An Integrative Approach that Empowers Clients (2013)
Conation (2020)
Conation is a young adult, existential-adventure novel that follows a 17 year-old girl, Ren Sterling, in a post-apocalyptic dystopian world where individual freedoms are limited by governmental and technological control. Through a series of tragic events, Ren learns to awaken and reclaim her intuition and power. The novel integrates ideas from my first book, Reclaiming Your Real Self, and addresses themes such as existential anxiety, free will, meaning, intuitive clarity, social justice and equity, individual versus collective rights, and the interface of technology and psychological health.
"What happens when adventure, philosophy, psychology, technology, and spirituality collide in a young adult coming of age novel? Conation offers a fast-paced, compelling, insightful, chilling ride into the social media, big brother-driven world in which we live. One-part The Matrix, one-part Hunger Games, and one-part Siddhartha--all wrapped up in a modern and highly relevant read that teaches, inspires, excites and entertains--Conation is a must read for all those yearning for more meaning in life. It takes readers on a suspenseful, modern, existential journey." - David Howitt, Author of Heed Your Call and CEO of The Meriwether Group
"Conation is a suspenseful roller coaster ride in a futuristic dystopian world that chillingly resembles our current technological and sociopolitical reality...it's profoundly creepy and ultimately uplifting."
- Chad Dahlstrom, Founder of Puzzle Box Horror
"Rick Johnson serves up a masterful futuristic thriller, full of suspense and plot twists, with contemporary themes that will delight all of those looking for a better future by reaching back to the indigenous roots of what connects us as human beings." - Robin Bagai, Psy.D., Depth Psychologist
Many of us struggle periodically with feelings of disconnection and meaninglessness
in our lives. A life journey with sustainable meaning must include a connection with the
essence of who we are, our Real Self. Our Real Self contains our inner wisdom and
discernment as well as impulses for growth and creativity. This self-help book presents
an integration of psychological concepts and spiritual themes in inclusive and
engaging ways that invite readers to embrace a process of discovery and health.
"Reclaiming Your Real Self integrates spirituality and psychology in new and useful ways. Complex concepts are presented clearly and they lead to ideas that you can use to transform life experience. Reading and actively engaging with this book will make a difference in your life." - Allen E. Ivey, EDD, ABPP, University of Massachusetts, author of Intentional Interviewing and Counseling
Although many clients want spiritual and philosophical issues to be addressed
in therapy, many mental health professionals report that they are ill-equipped
to meet clients' needs in this area. Providing a model that is approachable
from a variety of theoretical orientations, this book supports therapists in
becoming open to the unique ways that clients define, experience, and access
life-affirming spiritual beliefs and practices. It also provides practical steps
for integrating spirituality into psychotherapeutic process.
"Written with great clarity and intelligence, this book will be of benefit to all mental health practitioners, students of psychology, and those seeking a better understanding of their own process of psychological and spiritual transformation." - Tara Brach, Ph.D., Author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge
